Rifle Caliber

A mature Montana bull elk can weigh upwards of 1,000 pounds. We recommend a caliber of bullet with the necessary scientifically proven knockdown power to quickly and ethically take a big game animal. However, many current deer rifles are also completely capable of doing the same. We suggest a flat shooting caliber rifle which you are able to consistently and accurately shoot 100% of the time at distances of 300 yards or more in a varying degree of circumstances and positions. We spend one afternoon prior to your hunt going over last minute preparations and rifle sight in checks. If you are not capable of accurate placement during this time and are unable to correct any errors, we will not take you into the field to hunt. As a hunter, placing 3 bullets at 100 yards on a target range rest within a 2” group is expected. We also offer you the opportunity to test your skills at distances of up to 400 yards under realistic in the field shooting situations and will consider these performances in regarding the areas we will suggest for your hunting.

Bow/Archery

Archery Hunting for North America’s most challenging big game animal will require your complete preparation and commitment to this type of hunt. Most modern archery equipment including both compound and recurve bows are all very capable of taking a Montana bull elk. However, once again, shot placement is the absolute most important decision you will have to make. Before purchasing any new equipment, please consult with us. In addition, you will be expected to demonstrate shooting accuracy of up to 40 yards in realistic in the field shooting situations. If you are unable to do so and cannot correct this lack of preparation we will not take you into the field until you can do so.

"I just wanted to take a minute to personally thank you on behalf of Reel Recovery. The hospitality and graciousness of you and the staff and DMR is just the best. We do 15 Reel Recovery retreats around the country each year and you all are "hands down" the best hosts for our retreats. Everyone at DMR seems to really understand and appreciate the work we are doing with men battling life threatening cancer. The food was awesome this year with "Chef Nick" in the kitchen. Lennae and Kari were as beautiful and caring as ever. Dillon was a great "quiet presence" around all the men and you were your crazy knucklhead self which all the men love. Also, thanks for spending and awesome day with Dr Nell and I on the river. I will forever remember "Glommers" and "helibuggers". We all look forward to seeing everyone next year. Have a great fall. Long live the Mid-life crisis fly fishing experience! Be Well! Fish On!" --Captain Coy Theobalt

Planning your Elk Hunt

Planning an elk hunt can often feel like a daunting task, but this is where good outfitters earn their keep.  First and foremost, selecting the right hunt can make all the difference in the end result, which is ultimately your experience.  We rarely book new clients who've not spoken with some of our references and highly suggest you do the same.

Elk hunting in itself will likely be one of the most physically challenging ventures of your life.  Above your enjoyment of the hunt is your health and preparation.  We'll do our best to make sure you've done your homework, so that the rewards far outweigh the risks.  Experienced successful elk hunters agree that "success is when preparation and opportunity meet".  I will personally be available for consultation leading up to your hunt.  And remember it's not all about the end result, it's the steps we take to get you there.  The best elk hunts are seldom over very quickly.  Matter of fact, be sure to take a look at some of last seasons hunters who showed up looking for that "hunt of a lifetime".  100% of our clients are returns, They did their home work.

Once you book a hunt with us we will assist you in everything from proper gear, phyisical and mental preparation, expectations and of course get you so excited, focus on work my be trying.  Your Guaranteed tags will be sent to you-a very short form, not a lot of fine print, you send it back-you've got your license, no waiting.  After this we focus on final details, the good stuff.

Our clients from the past will testify that you will never find guides who care more about your hunt.  By the time you arrive at our main lodge, it will be readily apparent that there's nothing adverage about what we do.  You and your friends and family will be welcomed with great excitement.
