The Guides of Dome Mountain Ranch

We've selected the best of the best elk hunting guides that can be found. Hard working, friendly, they love their jobs, and it shows in their long list of return clientele.

Matt "Mad Matt" Freudenberg

Matt brings a life long passion for the outdoors combined with a definite "Dome Mountain" style of guiding with his adventuresome attitude and confident, quiet demeanor. A tell it like it is kind of guy, Matt has been known to go well beyond where most hunters would never imagine being physically capable of going. A pure hunter at heart from hard working family oriented blue collar stock, Matt is a superb big game and fly fishing guide. Any client who has the opportunity to have Matt by his side will return from his or her trip with a smile that sticks and a mind branded with sweet memories of the Big Sky state. Having been in the shoes of a "client" and calling home "back east" makes Matt a powerful part of the Dome Mountain guide staff.

"I've hunted elk in Colorado, Utah, Idaho and other parts of Montana, but this was without a doubt the best hunt I was ever on. Your horses are the best I have ever ridden and Matt was superb! He would do anything he could to get us an elk.
--Lyle Van Tossel

Ryan "PoPo" Curley

All of Ryan's clients will testify to his caring and passionate attitude for the hunt and most of all his client's enjoyment and experience. His patience and persistance has given even first time elk hunters a lesson in the outdoors which has helped them become very successful big game hunters. When Ryan isn't chasing elk with JB and company at Dome Mountain Ranch, he serves as one of New York City's finest Police Detectives. His unique background in working with a multitude of people combined with his daily commitment to conservation and the wide open spaces makes your time spent with this gentleman on the mountain a memorable experience to say the least. Ryan prides himself on having nearly a 100% return client rate which has included first time elk hunting couples.

"I have returned to Dome Mountain Ranch for the past seven seasons because I know that they don't make excuses, they know the country, the animals and know how to take a hunter and put them in the absolute best and most advantageous position day after day. Can't wait until next season!"
--Gary Hagga

Dylan "Farmer" Roberts

When it comes to being a "natural", Dylan is your man. Some say he is part grizzly bear and part elk. We tend to think that Dylan was actually an elk in his previous life. It isn't unusual to see Dylan drag an entire bull elk off the face of Dome Mountain all by himself, just for fun. With a quiet and perceptive personality Dylan's life long involvement in the outdoors makes him as pure an elk guide as they come. A proficient caller, excellent horseman along with a depth of understanding the moods and habits of elk and deer, Dylan gives his clients often more than would ever be expected from a Montana Elk Guide. He is at home behind the oars of a driftboat as he is miles from civilization in the Montana backcountry outwitting one big bull after another.

A little bit of Heaven, great hunting, great people and wonderful food and accommodations. Nothing was overlooked, couldn't have been better, we'll be back for sure. -Al Manfredi, No. Providence, RI

Tyler Barrus

When it comes to understanding elk behavior and hunting accordingly, Tyler Barrus gets things figured out. There's few full time guides in Montana, and very few that are full time because they're that good-he's one of em! He's been putting people on elk season after season regardless of their experience and abilities.  When elk hunting gets tougher than normal, you won't find Tyler making excuses, you'll find him on the next ridge making something happen.

"The opportunities at Dome Mountain are endless. Facilities such as yours are extremely rare for a hunting outfitter. Each member of your staff worked as a well-organized team with an attitude and politeness I found very refreshing." --Brenda Valentine, Bowhunter Magazine, Puryear, TN

Mick "Idywoot" Wilhelm

Mick brings the romantic life of being one of Montana's last real cowboys to the table. A life long elk hunter and guide he has made a successful career in the outdoors industry with a well known reputation from Idaho to the Dakotas. We're very fortunate to have Mick as one of our Montana elk guides here at Dome Mountain Ranch.

His unique background is always available for gut wrenching tales of days gone by of growing up on an Indian Reservation. Hunting elk and guiding is second nature to Mick and all of his clients will attest to his depth of knowledge and skills. We know we do.

Mick is one of those elk guides who makes the most rugged of Montana backcountry seem like a walk in a city park. Having him by your side on the mountain chasing elk is a sure bet for exciting and memorable days.

RICK "Rikki-Bobbi" Kalish

Once Rick got bored with being on a successful pit crew with NASCAR and a successful businessman he decided that a secondary career in being an elk hunting guide was simply next on his list. His maturity and years in the Montana elk country gives him the sort of experience that can only be gained through time. A wonderful smiling presence even in the most challenging situations, Rick has the ability to educate his clients on elk hunting and patience, which is why you will see his face behind many of big bull elk laying on the ground. An accomplished horseman and people person make Rick as versatile as they come.

Tommy Caffrey

When it comes to seasoned new age elk hunting guides you'll be hard pressed to find an elk hunting as well rounded as Tommy.  Regardless of your skill level or experience Tommy is the kind of guide that always seems to be on the same page.  He's one of those guides that no matter who you are he'll have your gut in knots from his quick wit and entertaining stories, while at the same time keep you focused on getting the most from your hunt. He's a true conservationist and as professional a guide as they come.  When he's not chasing elk on Dome Mountain he's either in a drift boat, duck blind or graciously providing someone with an incredible outdoor experience.
